Reporting to the chief financial officer (CFO) and Controller, the Assistant Controller will be responsible for oversight of all finance, accounting and reporting activities.

The Assistant Controller will assist the Controller in leading the day-to-day finance operations and supervise staff members including functional responsibility over accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll. The Assistant Controller will be responsible for ensuring that systems and procedures are in place to support effective program implementation and conduct flawless audits. The Assistant Controller will work closely with program leaders and their staff, not only to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures but also to explore how the finance function can support program operations.

In accordance with the federal wage-hour laws, this is a salaried position and is not subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act’s (FLSA) minimum wage and overtime pay requirements.

Examples of Essential Functions

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures.
  • Assist Controller with all audit activities
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of the organization’s financial status.
  • Leverage strengths of the current finance team members, help to clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and implement training programs in order to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals.
  • Assist the Controller in the oversight of all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
  • Assist Controller in preparing specialized reports as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Considerable knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting and cost control principles.
  • Considerable knowledge of automated financial and accounting reporting systems.
  • Considerable knowledge of federal and state financial regulations.
  • Considerable knowledge and experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments.
  • Considerable knowledge of grants management as it relates to compliance and reporting of government, corporate and foundation grants is essential.
  • Considerable knowledge of accounting and reporting software as well as personal computers and appropriate software applications including Microsoft Office Suite. Proficient in Excel and Word
  • Keen analytic, organization and problem solving skills which allows for strategic data interpretation versus simple reporting.
  • Commitment to coaching, mentoring, training, and retaining a diverse team; the foresight and ability to delegate accordingly.
  • Ability to provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.
  • Ability to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers.
  • Ability to interpret and follow instructions furnished verbally, in writing, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. 
  • Ability to write reports and correspondence using English grammar and spelling.
  • Requires strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management and board.
  • Successful completion of the required training courses within a specified period of time
  • Tuberculosis screening to assure no significant risk to the health and safety of others.
  • Successfully passing a criminal background investigation and pre-employment and random drug screenings.

Minimum Acceptable Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance with 2-4 years of public or private accounting related experience.  Must be a CPA candidate; CPA and/or MBA preferred.

Many of these individuals, while unsuccessful in traditional work situations, are extremely gifted in other areas. The program is constantly evolving to meet the needs of each individual and to find outlets for his/her many talents.
